- USS H-5 (SS-148)
The
Imperial Russian Navy ordered 18 "H"-class submarines from theElectric Boat Company in 1915. Eleven were delivered, and served as theAmerican Holland class submarines , but shipment of the final six was held up pending the outcome of theRussian Revolution of 1917 , and the boats were stored in knockdown condition atVancouver, British Columbia . All six were purchased by theUnited States Navy on20 May 1918 and assembled atPuget Sound Navy Yard ."H-5" (SS-148) was launched on
24 September 1918 , and commissioned on30 September 1918 with Lieutenant Gordon Hutchins in command.Operating out of
San Pedro, California , with SubDiv 6 and SubDiv 7, "H-5" participated in various training and battle exercises, with periodic overhauls atMare Island . She departedSan Francisco, California , on25 July 1922 in company with both divisions and arrived atNorfolk, Virginia , on14 September . "H-5" decommissioned at Norfolk on20 October 1922 . Her name was struck from theNaval Vessel Register on26 February 1931 . She was sold for scrapping28 November 1933 .References
