Román Javier González (born 28 January 1978 in Punta Alta, Argentina) is an Argentinian professional basketball player currently playing for Peñarol Mar del Plata and the Argentinian national team. He is a 6'11", 275 lbs. center. Gonzalez has dual Argentine and Italian citizenship.

Profesional career

Gonzalez is widely reputed to be a globetrotter, as he cannot settle with a team for a long period of time. Gonzalez has played in Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Dominican Republic. Having started his career in 1996, Gonzalez debuted in Argentina with Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia, averaging 2.6 points per game in 7 games. Continuing with Gimnasia in the 1997-98 season, he had only averaged 0.8 points per game in 28 games. In 1998, Gonzalez had signed with San Andres in TNA (Argentine second division) where he played until 2000.

Gonzalez had signed with Libertad de Sunchales in August 2000. There he went on to win several honours with this team, one Liga Nacional title in 2001 (averaging 6.4 points in 52 games) and one Liga Sudamericana title in 2002 (averaging 11.1 points in 49 games). In 2002, Gonzalez had a short spell in Bolivian club Real Santa Cruz, but he had made a comeback to Libertad for the 2002-03 season; averaging 20.2 points in 20 games played. However, Gonzalez left Libertad in 2003 due to an indisciplinary record. He signed with Aguada BC (Uruguay) in March 2003, averaging 19.3 points per game in 16 games; therefore he was regarded one of the best players in Uruguay in 2003 along with Argentina national basketball team teammate and fellow compatriot Paolo Quinteros.

Later that year, Gonzalez had signed a contract with Basket Crabs Rimini in LegaDue, Italy. It was the very first time Gonzalez played in Europe. That too, he was successful with this team, averaging 11.3 points in 35 games in 2003-04 and 14.8 points in 33 games in 2004-05 season. Roman Gonzalez had made Rimini go to the quarterfinals of both the seasons. Gonzalez, having claimed that he had got the chance to continue in Italy, had left the team after the 2004-5 season; and returned back to Argentina.

Roman Gonzalez had debuted with Argentino Atletico de Junin in September 2005. He had starred in all the 44 games, averaging 18.1 points per game. His performance in this team was so stellar was such that he had led Argentino de Junin into a second place finish in the Super 8 2005 (for Argentine Clubs). He was one of the best players in the team; in turn he was the MVP of this Super 8 competition.

2006 was a roundabout year for Roman Gonzalez; as he played for five different clubs during that year. In March 2006,
