Jo-Michael Scheibe (born
1950 ) is a nationally renowned choral conductor and instructor. He currently serves as Director of Choral Studies at theUniversity of Miami Frost School of Music . Scheibe is widely recognized for his work with contemporary choral literature, new music commissions, and young composers. Scheibe became director of the Florida Philharmonic Chorus; after the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra's demise in 2003, he formed the Master Chorale of South Florida from members of the Philharmonic Chorus, where he now serves as music and artistic director. Scheibe has prepared choruses for Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra, TheCleveland Orchestra withFranz Welser-Möst , TheNew World Symphony withMichael Tilson Thomas , Jahja Ling,James Judd , Max Valdez, Thomas Sanderling, andAlain Lombard . Scheibe is in active member of theAmerican Choral Directors Association , and ensembles under his leadership have performed several times at regional and national ACDA conventions. Most recently, the University of Miami-Frost Chorale premieredDavid Conte 's "The Nine Muses" at the 2007 National ACDA Convention inMiami . Under his leadership, the Frost Chorale has performed with such artists asLuciano Pavarotti ,José Carreras , Marvis Martin,Janice Chandler-Eteme , and Jeff Morrissey.Scheibe, a native of
California , attended theCalifornia State University, Long Beach and theUniversity of Southern California . He has also served as professor of choral studies at theNorthern Arizona University . Scheibe is a popular guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and abroad. In the fall of 2008, he will begin a new position as Chair of Choral Music at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
