Windfall, Indiana

Windfall is a town in Wildcat Township, Tipton County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the 'Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Windfall's population was 705 at the 2006 census.

Geography

Windfall City is located at coor dms|40|21|44|N|85|57|25|W|city (40.362138, -85.956852)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land.

History

Founding

Windfall was founded in 1853 by James B. Fouch. The first road from Windfall to Tipton was surveyed in 1849. John Nutter walked ahead of the surveyor in the dense woods, ringing a cowbell to indicate where each stake was to be driven.

World War II

From 1944 to 1945 Windfall was home to a World War II German POW camp.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 712 people, 291 households, and 208 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,444.4 people per square mile (947.9/km²). There were 307 housing units at an average density of 1,054.0/sq mi (408.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.30% White, 0.14% Native American, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population.

There were 291 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,000, and the median income for a family was $46,786. Males had a median income of $32,857 versus $24,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,948. About 8.7% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
