Foil fusing

Foil fusing

Foil fusing is the fusion of a foil / metallic sheet to another surface, usually paper. It is a highly precise and specialised method of printing, creating a metallic colour or sheen to an already printed piece.

Usually used in collaboration with a laser printer, or specialist heat printer, the foil sheets are applied using the tonal drum inside the laser printer, or after the initial print is made, on a specialist foil fusing printer.

The fuse is made by a chemical reaction that happens within the foil sheet when heat is applied; this being the catalyst for the fusing.

Other appliances, such as laminators, can also be used to fuse the foil sheets to the desired area, as long as the print is off a laser printer, as it needs the tonal reference to adhere to.
