After leaving the major leagues, he pitched in Mexico through 1984 and then became a manager in the Mexican leagues.In the early 1970s, Peña was married to American poker champion Barbara Enright. She is the only woman in the poker hall of fame. Barbara is still active today in the poker world and José is still active in the baseball world. They divorced in the mid 1970s but remained friends and lovers for nearly 15 years thereafter.
