Economy

Bhusan Steel, which is setting up a 2 million tonne integrated steel and power plant at Salanpur in Bardhaman district, will set up a cold rolled unit at Bijpur. Covering convert|100|acre|km2 of land this project will have a capacity of five lakh tons. It was cleared by West Bengal government on 22 August 2007. Politics

In 2006 state assembly elections Dr. Nirjharini Chakraborty of CPI(M) won the Bijpur seat defeating Kalyani Biswas (Basu) of AITC. In 2001, Jagadish Chandra Das of CPI (M) won defeating Jagadish Das, son of Akul Das, of AITC. Kamal Sengupta Basu of CPI (M) defeated Mrinal Kanti Singha Roy of INC in 1996. Jagadish Chandra Das of CPI (M) won the seat in 1977, 1982, 1987 and 1991 defeating INC candidates.
