Carmen Lomas Garza

Carmen Lomas Garza (born 1948) is a Mexican American artist.

Biography

Carmen Lomas Garza was born in 1948 in Kingsville, Texas. She experienced significant racism growing up, and she was not allowed to speak Spanish in school.Mesa-Bains, Amalia. "A Piece of My Heart", p16.] The initial roots of her artwork lay in her family, to whom she was close, and in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Lomas Garza's parents had been involved in political organizing through the American GI Forum, and Lomas followed in their footsteps by organizing Chicanos on her college campus.
