Polubotkivtsi Uprising

Polubotkivtsi Uprising

The Polubotkivtsi uprising is an armed revolt of the troops of Second Ukrainian Pavlo Polubotok Cossack Regiment (or "Polubotkivtsi", as they called themselves) and the members of Ukrainian Pavlo Polubotok military club that took place on July 17-18 1917 in Kyiv. The rebels’ main target was to immediately proclaim Ukraine’s independence. The rebellion itself had political and social reasons. Soldiers of the Polubotko regiment deeply lacked food supplies and medicines, experienced poor living conditions. Political reasons were those that the Ukrainian Central Rada obtained pale national and military policy. In whole, more than 10 thousand soldiers and most of the population of Kyiv found themselves in the epicenter of the revolt that was later stifled due to the effective counter-actions of the Rada and leaders of the Kyiv Military District. The participants of the revolt were mainly exiled to the Romanian WWI battle-front where they had soon found their death.
