"Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" is the opening tune on Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison's 1972 album, "Saint Dominic's Preview". It was released as a single and charted at #61 on the US Hot 100 with the rare B-side "You've Got the Power".

It was inspired by a line in Jackie Wilson's song "Reet Petite". [Hinton. "Celtic Crossroads", p141] John Collis said about the song, "The exuberant scat phrase kicking off the first track, 'Jackie Wilson Said', hotly pursued by a confident, big band r'n'b arrangement, promises well." [Collis. "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart", p132]

Appearance on other albums

*It was included as one of the songs on Morrison's 1990 multi-platinum compilation album, "The Best of Van Morrison".
*"Jackie Wilson Said" was one of the songs included on the 2007 compilation album, "Van Morrison at the Movies - Soundtrack Hits".
*A re-mastered version of this song is the opening track on the 2007 compilation album, "Still on Top - The Greatest Hits".

Covers

*In 1982, British Pop band, Dexys Midnight Runners recorded and released a cover version of "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" on their "Too-Rye-Ay" album. The song was later released as the follow up single to the #1 hit "Come On Eileen" and reached #5 on the U.K. charts. They performed the song on the British sitcom The Young Ones. They also performed the song on Top of the Pops, but in front of a picture of darts player, Jockie Wilson. There remains some debate as to whether it was a misunderstanding or a deliberate act.
