Mexican descent, grew up inElk Grove, California and attended Elk Grove High School. She attended theUniversity of Portland , where she was a member of Portland's 2005NCAA championship team, and completed her senior year in 2007. Lopez played on several U.S. national youth teams and was the captain of the U.S. team at the2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship . She earned her first cap for the senior women's team at the 2005Algarve Cup . She was a starting defender for the U.S. in the2007 FIFA Women's World Cup , and a member of the gold-medal winning squad at the2008 Summer Olympics . She married former University of Portland baseball player Brian Cox on December 16, 2007 and now uses his last name. She was named the 2007 Oregon Amateur Athlete of the Year.
