Palindrome Intermedia Performance Group

Formerly Palindrome Dance Company, Palindrome Intermedia Performance Group, combines science and technology with dance. They are known for their work with interactive dance technology -- bio-sensors and motion tracking technology that the music, lighting or video projections be controlled by the dancers' movement.

Palindrome was founded in New York City in 1982, moved to Nürnberg, Germany in the 90's (they rehearse in the countryside near Stuttgart). It is directed by Robert Wechsler. Computer engineer Frieder Weiss worked with the company between 1995 until 2006, developing software (EyeCon) and hardware (various body-worn electrode systems) for their performances.

Since the music is sometimes controlled by the dancers' movements, the music must be of a type that allows realtime variation and modification in ways which are neither inconsequential, nor destructive to the musical composition. Electroacoustic music is thus ideally suited to their work.

Palindrome tours internationally (Tokyo, New York, Montreal, Berlin, Buens Aires, Paris, London, Oslo,...) and has won several awards, including first prize at the Berlin Transmediale International Media Arts Festival (2002) and Dresden CynetArt(2001).

Principle collaborative partners include composers Erling Wold, Dan Hosken, Butch Rovan, Vladimir Tarnopolsky and choreographer/dancer Helena Zwiauer.

2007 Project: "Das Oklo Phänomen", which is a mixed humorous-and-tragic work concerned with global and personal catastrophes.
