University of Michigan Dearborn Rugby

The University of Michigan - Dearborn Rugby Football Club (UMD RFC) is the official Rugby Club of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. It competes in the Second Collegiate Division of the Michigan Rugby Union [http://www.michiganrfu.org] (MRU)

History

The UMD RFC is a newly founded College Rugby Club in the Michigan Rugby Union which has seen a recent growth of college rugby clubs. The UMD RFC joins Wayne State University as the newest members to the Michigan College Rugby ranks. Joining UMD RFC in the Second Collegiate Division is Oakland University, Lake Superior State University, Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. The UMD RFC was founded in 2007 by then freshmen Marc Sanko and Brian Hehir who sought to create a sport which the University could rally around and truly enjoy as an entire campus. Noticing the lack of an American Football team on campus, they believed that a Rugby team at the University of Michigan - Dearborn would be in a unique position, having the possibility of being the most popular sport on campus and possibly catapulting the popularity of Rugby in the Metro-Detroit area with the hopeful success of the Club in Dearborn. The team started with an original 14 members in May before team membership dropped to a low of only 5 players, then after a successful recruiting off-season numbers would rise and sit around 20 full time members for the Fall. The Club was officially recognized by the University of Michigan - Dearborn Athletic Department in June 2007, and then earned the official recognition of USA Rugby in early August.
