Ralph Sharman

Ralph Edward Sharman (April 11, 1895 - May 24, 1918), nicknamed "Bally") was a Major League Baseball outfielder who died while serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Sharman was a right-handed hitting outfielder who was called up to the major leagues at age 22 in September 1917. He played 13 games for the Philadelphia Athletics, batting .297 and collecting 11 hits, 2 doubles, a triple, 2 RBIs, a stolen base, and three walks. When the season ended, Sharman was inducted into the Army as the United States entered World War I. Sharman died tragically while in training at Camp Sheridan, Alabama on May 24, 1918. Sharman drowned while swimming in the Alabama River. The others major league ball players killed in World War I were: Alex Burr‚ Bun Troy, Larry Chappell‚ and Eddie Grant.
