In Ireland, Eircom (the largest telephone company in Ireland) began rolling out Broadband in 2002. With over 85 ISPs [Irish Government Broadband Information [http://www.broadband.gov.ie/List+all++Services/] ] there is now significant choice and competition to the point where the average monthly subscription cost is $40.41, 20% cheaper than the average of $49 for the 35 OECD countries surveyed [OECD roadband average monthly subscription price, Oct. 2007, USD PPP [ http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/22/44/39575002.xls ] ] .

Broadband is available in Ireland via DSL, Cable, Wireless and Satellite [ Irish Government Broadband Information [http://www.broadband.gov.ie/List+all++Services/] ] . As of November 2007, DSL is available to around 88% of homes and businesses. Overall takeup of broadband (cable, DSL, wireless, etc.) is 1,054,920, or a penetration rate of 24.3%, as of Q2 2008 [ [http://www.comreg.ie/_fileupload/publications/ComReg0875.pdf ComReg Q2 2008 Report] ] .

In 2005, Northern Ireland became the only European geographic region with 100% broadband coverage and one of a few outside Asia, this was achieved by a partnership between the Northern Ireland Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment and BT Northern Ireland.
