Mar is a modern indie post-rock band hailing from Fayetteville, Arkansas. The band originally started in Charlotte, North Carolina around 2004.

History

Mar was founded in 2004 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lead singer, Kyle Reidy, named the band after his mother who died in 1999 of cancer.

The Silence

In early 2005 the band, which was composed of Kyle Reidy, Patrick Atkinson, Claire Long, and Nate Reed, was invited to record their debut CD in Iceland at Sigur Rós's studio in Mosfellsbær. Due to a longer than usual recording session of their CD, Takk..., Mar was forced to move their recording session to Syrland Studios in Reykjavík, Iceland. Producing the record was Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf, Samuli Kosminen of Múm, Gunnar Tynes of Múm, and Axel (Flex) Árnason.

After the Recording

At the conclusion of the recording the band went on a small tour with The Album Leaf. The band then returned to their home of Charlotte. After the tour the band split ways and Kyle moved back to his home town of Harrison, Arkansas, but continued to play under the name Mar.

The small break, thought to be the end of the band, actually gave rise to a newer incarnation. After going through some more of a lineup change and a botched Tour during the summer of 2005 the band settled on a final lineup and began to write their second album.

The Sound

With a new lineup, composed of Kyle Reidy, Ty Denison, Dylan Aycock, Danny Klein, Adam Putman, and Shawn Boggus, the band entered the studio. The band began their recording their next album at the beginning of July 2007 with their old producer Áxel (Flex) Arnason. Joining them for violin on the record was Bright Eyes violinist Anton Patzner, and Imogen Heap and Rasputina cellist Zoë Keating. Instead of opting for a traditional recording they decided to set up a studio in a cabin located in Eureka Springs at the heart of the Ozark Mountains. "The Sound" is a great departure from the more mellow feeling of "The Silence". "The Sound" was released late September 2007 for promotional purposes under Ring Road Records and December 14, 2007 in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan under Thomason Sounds/Inpartmaint, Inc.. "The Sound" will receive wide release in the United States and the rest of the world in early 2008 under Ring Road Records.
