Alan Thompson (born
14 June ,1959 inGisborne ,New Zealand ) is a double Olympic Gold medallist incanoeing (kayak ) events.He was selected for the
1980 Summer Olympics inMoscow and was one of 4 athletes, 3 of them canoeists, who competed for New Zealand despite the boycott.In the Olympic Games in
Los Angeles ,1984 he won gold medals in the K1 1000m and K4 1000m (withGrant Bramwell , Ian Ferguson andPaul MacDonald ). He also competed in the K1 1000m at the1988 Summer Olympics held inSeoul ,Korea finishing 6th in the final.After retiring from top-level canoeing Thompson became a coach, selector and manager for New Zealand canoeing teams and eventually became president of the New Zealand Canoeing Federation.
