School Leaving Certificate
- School Leaving Certificate
The School Leaving Certificate is the final exam in Nepal secondary school system and is commonly called the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Examination. Every student must appear in this exam after they complete 10th grade of their study before they join the higher secondary or intermediate level education. The SLC exam is normally scheduled in May/June of every year. This exam is known as the "iron barrier" in Nepal as the students who fail this exam cannot further their study.
Exam centers
The whole country is divided into 5 regions and every region is further divided into many exam centers. The exam paper is different from region to region but is the same in one single region. Every exam takes place at the same time throughout the whole country.
Result
About three months after the completion of SLC Exam, the result is published by the Examination Control Board, Sanothimi, Bhaktpur. Students are categorised into five divisions according to their score
1. Distinction - above 80%
2. First Division - 60% to <80%
3. Second Division - 45% to <60%
4. Third Division - 33% to <45%
Students scoring below 33% are considered failed. Despite such low percentage requirement to pass the exam, many students (more than 50%), mostly students of governmental schools in rural areas of Nepal, still fail the exam every year because of poor quality of education in the country and due to the lack of proper education facilities in rural parts of Nepal. Students studying in private and boarding schools in the urban areas, however, hardly fail.
The result of the SLC is very important as students with high marks get various scholarship in their higher study.
