Carrboro High School is a suburban non-charter high school located in Carrboro, North Carolina. It is located close to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Carrboro High school is part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district which contains two other high schools, Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School. When the school was being named, controversy existed over whether it should be named Carrboro High School or South Chapel Hill High School, as some parents feared that not including the "prestigious" name associated with the other Chapel Hill schools would hurt their children's chances when applying to college. In addition, there was some debate about its name considering that most of Carrboro High's students come from Chapel Hill and not Carrboro. Its first year of operation was 2007-2008 and its principal was Jeff Thomas, a former vice principal from Chapel Hill High School. cite web |url=http://www2.chccs.k12.nc.us/education/components/faq/faq.php?sectiondetailid=38421&sc_id=1187461003 |title=Carrboro High School FAQ |format= |work= ]

Academics

Carrboro High School offers a number of advanced academic classes, including a number of AP classes. Carrboro High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year without an auditorium, but will still offer a number of performing arts courses and plans to rent local theaters for dramatic productions over the next few years. The auditorium is planned to be built around the year 2011, however due to low budget, the auditorium may not open for several more years. The auditorium would take six months to build, so building would have to continue into the school year, even if it started in the summer. Carrboro High School's roster of courses is not as extensive as the other schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district due to its smaller enrollment, but it plans to expand the number of offered courses as enrollment grows.

In addition, some students go to the other local high schools (Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School) in order to take specific classes that are not yet offered at CHS.

Athletics

Carrboro High School is a 2A high school in North Carolina. It offers the same varsity sports as Chapel Hill High School. Carrboro High School has access to a baseball field, a softball field, a track, a gymnasium, and two general practice fields.Carrboro cross-country won the school's first trophy from its second place finish in the Open race at the Tanglewood Invitational, held in Winston Salem [ cite web |url=http://nc.milesplit.us/meets/25180/results/55895 |title=MileSplit North Carolina - Tanglewood Invitational Ends Regular Season |format= |work= ] . Carrboro field hockey is sometimes credited with the first win for Carrboro High, as the won a game at a tournament over the summer, but it is debatable because it was out of the regular season. Tennis is credited with the first official win, winning in their first match. Marching band won the school's first non-athletic trophy. The school's swim team placed third in the NC 2A state championship meet where Ken Ryan broke the 2A state record for 50 meter free.

Issues

Also in the 2007-2008 year, there was an issue about racism. In December there was a fight between a white student and several black students after the white student made racist comments and used Nazi symbols. Later, in January, further violence erupted and several students were arrested and charged with ethnic intimidation. One student was also arrested in possession of a knife, but it was not used in any of the incidents. In response to the clashes, the district organized a discussion on racism, which seemed to help the situation as no further incidents were reported.
