Burger grew up in the northern
Illinois city of Belvidere. He received a bachelor's degree in political science fromStanford University . From 1979 to 1980, he was Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Daily.Newsweek career
Burger was Senior Editor from 1981 until 1994. During this time, he was based in Newsweek offices in London, New York, and Tokyo. He was the magazine's European economics editor in the early 1990s.
