Vredefort is a small farming town in the
Free State province ofSouth Africa withcattle ,peanuts ,sorghum ,sunflowers andmaize being farmed. It is home to 3,000 residents. The town was established in
1876 on a farm called Visgat, on theVredefort crater , the largest and oldest visiblebolide impact crater in the world (with a diameter of 300km). It was this approximately 10 km wide bolide that led to the preservation of thegold -bearing reefs of the Free State some 2.02 billion years ago. The town got its name after the peaceful conclusion of a threatened war between theTransvaal and theOrange Free State . The British built aconcentration camp here during theSecond Boer War to houseBoer women and children. The Vredefort Dome (Crater) is currently the largest and oldest known meteor impact site in the world [ [http://www.unb.ca/passc/ImpactDatabase/CIDiameterSort2.htm Earth Impact Database] ] . It is South Africa's 7th World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart.
