Chiao Mei First appearance The Big Boss Last appearance The Big Boss Portrayed by Maria Yi Information Gender Female Relatives Hsiu Chien (brother) Chiao Mei is a fictional character from the film The Big Boss. She is a young woman who resides over her cousins and brother in a small home in Pak Chong, Thailand.
History
In The Big Boss, Chiao Mei is portrayed as the typical helpless "damsel in distress". Despite being the second billed character in the film, Mei's role is actually very insignificant, basically only existing to be a love interest for the film's protagonist, Cheng Chao-an portrayed by Bruce Lee.
Mei is very kind and tries to keep her family and friends together during troubling times. However, she is known to be very sensitive, and may break down crying within seconds of feeling sad or depressed.
During the events of The Big Boss, Mei becomes the center of attention for Hsiao Chiun, who plans to kidnap her as a "trophy" for his father, Hsiao Mi. While Chiun and Mi have her kidnapped, she escapes later on through the help of a disgruntled servant of Mi's.
Mei's age is unknown, but it can be assumed she is written to be the same age as actress Maria Yi, who was 18 years old at the time of the films release.
The whereabouts of Mei after the events of The Big Boss are unknown, but it is possible she returned to her native home away from Thailand.
Family
Chiao Mei has one brother, Hsiu Chien, and several cousins she looks after. Various versions of the story say that she is Cheng Chao-an's distant sister or cousin, as she refers to him as "Big Brother Cheng" and "Cousin Cheng". However, these may be simple nicknames treating Cheng "as a brother/cousin" rather than an actual relative.
Trivia
Judging by various behind the scenes photos, Chiao Mei's long pig-tail hairstyle was simply either a wig or hair extensions as actress Maria Yi actually had shorter hair during filming.
