Lexington is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. It was named for the Lexington, Kentucky, where the town's founder General Ashael Gridley was born, and the Battle of Lexington, where General Gridley's father fought [http://www.lexingtonillinois.org/fort/HowLexingtonWasNamed.htm] .

Geography

Lexington is located at coor dms|40|38|33|N|88|47|7|W|city (40.642520, -88.785410)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.7 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3000 people, 760 households, and 550 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,820.3 people per square mile (703.1/km²). There were 803 housing units at an average density of 764.5/sq mi (295.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.95% White, 0.10% African American, 0.21% Native American, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 760 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $46,146, and the median income for a family was $54,336. Males had a median income of $40,031 versus $24,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,898. About 3.1% of families and 4.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.6% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.

chool Sports

Lexington has a strong tradition of high school football, in which the Minutemen have played in the Illinois State Championship game a total of four times (1980, 1989, 1994, 2001). In the 2006 season, Lexington advanced to the Final Four where they were defeated by Aledo. The Minutemen head coach Don Tanney retired after the 2006 season. He was replaced by Mike Castleman.

Lexington also provides baseball, softball, track, basketball, volleyball, and golf and co-op swimming with Pontiac High School.

In 2008, the junior high girls won the state championship title for Class A in volleyball

Lexington High School usually enrolls between 40 and 50 students per grade level freshmen through seniors.

Trivia

Lexington is the current home of the John Patton Log Cabin.
