James W. Kynes (died October 14, 1988) is an American lawyer. He served as Florida Attorney General and as a corporate executive.

He was the captain of the 1949 Florida Gators football team and was an All-SEC player at the University of Florida. He earned his law degree from the University of Florida College of Law.

Kynes became Florida Attorney General in January 1964, succeeding Richard Ervin, resigned as attorney general to accept an appointment to the Florida Supreme Court. Florida governor Farris Bryant appointed Kynes to serve the the remainder of the term. Kynes accepted the offer after three weeks of consideration.

After the end of his Florida Attorney General, Kynes became vice president of Jim Walter Corporation. He was executive vice president, secretary, and general counsel of its successor companies Hillsborough Holding Corporation and Walter Industries, Inc. Kynes died at age 60 of stomach cancer at his home in Tampa.
