- Trinidad and Tobago general election, 1956
General elections were held in Trinidad and Tobago. The main issue during the campaign was independence from the United Kingdom. The result was a win for the People's National Movement, which claimed a narrow majority in the Legislative Council.
A notable contest was the Tunapuna seat, where former West Indies cricketer Learie Constantine representing the PNM fought Radio Trinidad announcer Surujpat Mathura in the seat of Tunapuna; Constantine won.
