homepage = [http://www.glasgowstudent.net/ www.glasgowstudent.net]Glasgow University Students' Representative Council was founded on
March 9 1886 and recognised as the legal representative body forUniversity of Glasgow students by theUniversities (Scotland) Act 1889 . Unlike in other Scottish universities, student representation to the university is not the function of a Students' Association. Moreover, the GUSRC plays a limited role in the social lives of students, those being the purview of theGlasgow University Union and theQueen Margaret Union , although it does fund some 60 clubs and societies. All of the SRC's offices are located in the John McIntyre Building on University Avenue.Representation
The SRC has many different levels of student representatives from class reps, to students who sit on the University court, to representing students in academic appeals.
The Council comprises 37 representatives elected on the basis of faculties, as well as several Welfare & Equal Opportunities Officers responsible for areas such as mature, international, and LGBT students. The organisation is led by four full-time
sabbatical officers. The SRC is also home to the Rector of the University, elected by the students to represent them, primarily through the rector's role as chair of court. The current rector is
Mordechai Vanunu .Glasgow University SRC is represented at a national level by the
Coalition of Higher Education Students in Scotland (CHESS), theNational Postgraduate Committee (NPC), and theAldwych Group .Services
The SRC provides the following non-representative services to students at the University:
* Minibus - A free service to the halls of residence from campus
* Jobshop - a job vacancies service
* Secondhand Bookshop - students can buy and sell course texts
* Nightline - an anonymous, confidential telephone support and information service
* Photocopying - the cheapest phocopying service available for students at the University of GlasgowUntil 2004 the SRC ran a shop selling stationery, newspapers, snacks and University merchandise. It was housed in the now derilict "Hub" building beside the University library.
Media
The SRC also partly funds and houses four Student Media groups, they retain
editorial independence from the SRC whilst benefiting from its support. Many of those involved in the SRC's Student Media have won awards for their work and gone on to find a career in the media. These groups are:
*Glasgow University Guardian - fortnightly newspaper
*Glasgow University Magazine (GUM) [http://www.gum.src.gla.ac.uk/] - termly magazine
*Glasgow University Student Television (GUST) - broadcast online and via screens around campus
* Subcity Radio - internet radio stationThe SRC previously referred to the media as "publications" and until 2004 the SRC website glasgowstudent.net was run as a fifth media group. There are now other student run media groups on campus including the GUUi and qmunicate although these are not editorially independent.
