- Catcleugh House
Catcleugh House is a late Victorian
mansion built in1893 located in Catcleugh,Rochester dn. The house was built by the then Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company for Charles Hawksley, son of renownedreservoir and waterworksarchitect andengineer Thomas Hawksley . The T and C Hawksley company had been commissioned by the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company (now referred to asNorthumbrian Water ) to build a reservoir in Catcleugh that would supplementNewcastle-upon-Tyne s dwindling freshwater supply .The mansion has been maintained and owned by Northumbrian Water for most of its life and had been used primarily as a recreational site and for visitors and guests before being sold during 2005. It is now the main residence of a financier, who notably becomes the second formal owner of the property in over a hundred years.
The house comes with extensive grounds of a mixture of woods and grasslands. The river Reed flows through the grounds of the house with an abundance of freshwater salmon during winter months. A short walk through the woodlands leads to the Catcleugh Reservoir with it's picturesque setting.
