Simon Called Peter

"Simon Called Peter" is a novel by Robert Keable (1887-1927) [ [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,723410,00.html] Time Magazine, Jan 2, 1928 ] which was a best-seller in 1921. [ [http://greatwarfiction.wordpress.com/2006/06/11/robert-keable/ Great War Fiction] by George Simmer] The title is a reference to Simon Peter the apostle and first Pope of the Catholic church. It was mentioned in "The Great Gatsby": the narrator reads a chapter and describes it as not making any sense, because it was either terrible or due to the whiskey.

The book was controversial at its introduction due to its sexual and religious content; it was made into a play by Jules Eckert Goodman and Edward Knoblock [ [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,718945,00.html] Time Magazine, Aug. 18, 2004 ] ; it had a short run in Chicago. [ [http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?ID=9621 Internet Broadway Database] ] The novel was followed by a sequel, "Recompense", published in 1924 [ [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,929282,00.html] Time April 21, 1924.] and made into a 1925 motion picture with the same title, directed by Harry Beaumont [ [http://www.fandango.com/harrybeaumont/filmography/p+81121 Harry Beaumont Filmography ] ]
