Tavi Murray

"Our heartiest congratulations go to Tavi on the award of the Polar Medal. This is an outstanding achievement, and indicative of how Swansea attracts truly world-class academics, who are widely respected for the quality of their research." "Professor Richard B Davies, Vice-Chancellor, Swansea University"

Tavi Murray is a noted glaciologist, one of only 8 women [ [http://www.swan.ac.uk/news_centre/NewsArchive/2006-2007/Headline,13640,en.asp 8th woman to win award] ] to have won the Polar Medal.

Education

After school in Oxford Murray gained a First Class Honours degree in Physics and Computer Science from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. In 1990 she was awarded a doctorate in geophysics from the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute.

Academic career

In 1993 she was appointed Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Leeds, being promoted to Reader in 2002 and Professor in 2004. The following year she was chosen to head up the Swansea Glaciological Group [ [http://geography.swan.ac.uk/glaciology/people/tmurray/ Academic C.V] ] .

Major awards

From 2004 she has been Leverhulme Research Fellow studying "Basal conditions on Rutford Ice Stream, Antarctica" [ [http://geography.swan.ac.uk/glaciology/people/hsykes/fringe_poster.pdf Progress of project] ] . A leading member of the International Glaciological Society [ [http://www.igsoc.org/annals/36/ Research with the Society] ] Murray is unusual that her medal cited discoveries at both poles [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/6214097.stm BBC Wales News] ] . September 2007 marked the launch of the GLIMPSE Project [ [http://www.greenlandice.org The GLIMPSE Project] ] , a 5 year project headed by Murray to determine the controls on thinning at the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet. GLIMPSE is funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award granted to Murray in mid-2007.
