The "Thesaurus linguae Latinae" is the most comprehensive dictionary of the Latin language; it covers every author and work from the first items of Latin up to 600 AD. The long-term project, situated at the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, took up the work in 1894 and the first fascicle was printed in 1900. At the present moment, the staff in Munich are finishing the letter 'P' and at the same time treating words beginning with the letters 'N' and 'R'. The articles are published in printed form and on CD-ROM and DVD and are distributed by K. G. Saur Verlag. [Holmes, N. The project is staffed by about 20 Latinists, both German and non-German. Among them are holders of scholarships, who work at the Thesaurus for a limited period as part of their academic training. The institute's archive and its unique library are consulted by scholars from the whole world. The project was instituted by the academies of Berlin, Göttingen, Leipzig, Munich and Vienna. Since 1949 the Thesaurus has been an international project, in which at present more than 20 academies and learned societies from three continents participate.
