John Marshall Butler

John Marshall Butler

John Marshall Butler (July 21, 1897 – March 14, 1978) was a Republican member of the United States Senate, representing the State of Maryland from 1951-1963.

Early life

Butler was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Baltimore public schools. In 1917, during World War I, he enlisted in the United States Army and served until 1919.

After the war, Butler became a student at Johns Hopkins University in 1919 and 1921, and graduated from the University of Maryland Law School in 1926. He was admitted to the Bar that year, and commenced the practice of law in Baltimore.

Career

In 1947, Butler was selected as a member of the City Service Commission of Baltimore and served until 1949. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1950, representing Maryland, and reelected in 1956. He decided not to run for re-election in 1962.

Later life

Butler resided in Baltimore until his death in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He is buried at Druid Ridge Cemetery, in Pikesville, Maryland.
