Louis Sédilot

Louis Sédilot

Louis Sédilot is honoured to be one of the first French colonists to populate Québec. He was born about 1599 or 1600 at Montreuil-les-Bresches, France, and moved to Gif-sur-Yvette, Île-de-France where he worked as a gardener. He married Marie Charier about 1625-1627, and they had one child, Marie. After Marie Charier died, Louis married Marie Grimoult in 1633 at Paris, France. They placed his daughter, Marie, in a convent on rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, and they sailed to Nouvelle-France, settling at Québec sometime between 1633-1636. Louis worked as a clearer for the Compagnie de Nouvelle-France. In 1639, he travelled to France and returned with his daughter, Marie. At Québec, Louis and Marie Grimoult had another six children. By 1660, Louis had acquired three farms near Québec. He died January 25, 1672, and he was buried the following day at Notre-Dame-de-Québec.
