Jack Matthew Maggerty (born birth date|1984|1|11) is an American professional basketball player at the point guard position for the Cape Cod Frenzy of the American Basketball Association.

High school career

Maggerty attended Brooklyn Technical High School from 1999-2003. Given the school's limited offerings in athletics, Maggerty opted instead to play in amateur leagues around New York City as opposed to a high school district team. He was known throughout the Brooklyn suburbs as "Jack Knife," and was rumored to have been a fierce rival of fellow Brooklyn point guard Sebastian Telfair. This may be a false rumor spread by overzealous locals, though, as Maggerty himself refutes this claim, and insists he's never met Telfair, nor played against him.

College career

Maggerty attended the University of Texas at El Paso following his senior year of high school. He states that his parents had to pay for most of his tuition fees, because the informal nature of his basketball career to that point didn't impress the UTEP administration, as they were wary his skills could've been more rumor and flash than substance. During his first week on campus, however, Maggerty impressed enough in practices and workouts to secure himself a position as the team's backup point guard for the 2004 season. His inaugural campaign was sadly cut short by a left hamstring injury he sustained midseason during a lower body weight training session. To further complicate matters, Maggerty had tried to hide his injury from team personnel, and in doing so had caused a stress injury in his right knee as he tried to compensate for his injured left leg. Maggerty's 2004 season ended on the bench.

Maggerty would later blame UTEP training staff for urging him to lift more weight at a greater frequency than his body would allow, and revealed that he no longer engages in traditional lifting, opting for yoga and martial arts training instead to maintain his strength, balance and flexibility.

Going Pro

After his injury riddled freshman season, Maggerty shocked UTEP as well as his family by deciding to drop out of college and attempting to play professional basketball. He entered his name into the NBA draft in what Maggerty admitted was merely a formality; no NBA team, he said, had any interest in a "short, flaky guy on two bad legs." He would be invited to play for the Memphis Grizzlies summer league team in 2005, but with the team's roster already set, his performance would ultimately prove irrelevant. Maggerty would sign a contract with the Boston Frenzy (now the Cape Cod Frenzy), an ABA team in Massachusetts.

ABA career

After taking over the starting role at the beginning of the 2006 season, Maggerty has become a consistent star in the ABA, and is known as one of the most dynamic and crafty performers at the point guard position. Throughout his ABA career, he has averaged 17.9 points per game, 8.2 assists per game, and 3.4 rebounds per game. He is a potent and balanced scorer, just as adept at hitting the three as he is at snaking his way to the basket as evidenced by his .509 field goal percentage, in addition to his .442 three-point percentage.
