Berwari tribe

Berwari tribe

Berwari is the name of a Kurdish tribe in Iraq. The Berwari are divided into two main branches, the Berwari Bala and the Berwari Jeri. Each tribe lives in about 80 villages.

Berwari parents are known for stressing education among their youth and many Berwari have graduated from universities.

In 1971 most of their villages were destroyed by the Baathist party. Many Berwari subsequently emigrated to Iran, Turkey, the United States and European countries.

Nisrin Barwari, Iraqi minister of development and construction, is a prominent Berwari.
