History
This line was built in 1832 by the Midland Railway to serve the small communities in western Leicestershire between Leicester and Burton upon Trent as well as handle the vast colliery products.

Freight
Collieries at Ellistown, Nailstone, Ibstock and Bardon provided mainly coal initially but more recently roadstone, gravel and granite have become the norm.
Stations
Coalville was the most important station along the line, the town once boasting two stations, collieries at Whitwick and Snibston providing passengers. A less important stop was Ashby de la Zouch a historical spa town with connections to Lord Hastings.
