Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy

Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy

Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy was a Telugu fighter for Independence in India.

Reddy led one of the first popular revolts in India against British occupation.

After Kurnool District had come under British rule as one of a number of ceded districts, Reddy, the local chieftain (palegar) of Koilkuntla, refused to share the revenue of the region with the British. He then led a popular uprising against the British. The Collector of the ceded district, Thomas Monroe, took a serious view of the rebellion and ordered Reddy's capture.

Reddy was in favour of an armed uprising and is supposed to have used guerilla tactics of warfare. He attacked the treasury at Koilkuntla and marched towards Kumbam (Prakasan District).

Reddy escaped the British captain Holt, and took refuge in the Nizam state. He was caught after six weeks, and hanged publicly by the British in Koilkuntla.

The story of Narasimha Reddy has been serialized on television in a project led by the late NTR, starring the Telugu actors Chiranjeevi, Bala Krishna and Venkatesh. Both Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna said how much they had been inspired by the freedom fighter's story.
