MCMV 2010 class mine countermeasure vessel

The MCMV 2010 class mine countermeasure vessel is a series of three future multi-purpose mine countermeasure vessels (MCMV) of the Finnish Navy. The ships are being manufactured at the Italian shipyard Intermarine S.p.A.. The ships will be launched in 2010-2012, and will reach operational readiness by 2015.

The Finnish government took a decision to order three new MCVs in 2004. The order was placed in November 2006, at the Italian shipyard Intermarine S.p.A. The value of the order is 244.8 million euros. The MCMV 2010s will replace the Kuha class minesweepers.

The class name "MCMV 2010" is a temporary name, and the class, as well as the ships, remains to be named. The Finnish Navy employes a traditional name system, and previous distinguished mine warfare wessels include e.g. "Keihässalmi", "Riilahti", and "Ruotsinsalmi".

The ships will be constructed and equipped to be ready to participate in international crisis respond operations in Europe. The ships will be equipped with Hugin, an autonomous underwater vehicle, which carries an advanced side scanning sonar, EM710, which is a sophisticated echosounder for seabed surveys, TOPAS, an echosounders with jets that penetrate the uppermost strata of the seabed, and HiPAP, a positioning system for underwater use.
