Gattinara is a red
wine withDenominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status produced from Nebbiolo grapes grown within the boundaries of the commune ofGattinara which is located in the hills in the north of the province of Vercelli, northwest ofNovara . It was awarded DOC status in 1967 and received its DOCG classification in 1990. The wine is made primarily from theNebbiolo grape varietal (known locally as Spanna; minimum 90%) blended with up to 10%Bonarda di Gattinara and no more than 4% ofVespolina . The wine is aged in oak barrels for 1 year, two years if it is a riserva, with an additional two years of ageing in the bottle. Travaglini, Antoniolo and Dessilani are notable producers.References
