Sherman Square is a diminutive public space at the intersection of
West 72nd Street and Broadway on theUpper West Side ofManhattan , inNew York City . The small parcel of land, acquired by the city in 1849, was named forWilliam Tecumseh Sherman , who had once resided nearby, in 1891. The square fronts West 72nd Street on the south; across the street to the north liesVerdi Square .In the 1960s and 1970s the adjacent Verdi Square and Sherman Square were known by local users and dealers as "needle park."
