A group of roughly 150 Taliban militants mounted a rare frontal assault on a United States-led coalition firebase codenamed Firebase Anaconda using small arms fire, grenades, and 107 mm rockets. American and Afghan forces repelled the assault using mortars, automatic weapons fire, and air support.

The Taliban assault was repulsed, with at least 75 Taliban fighters killed. No U.S.-led coalition casualties were reported.

The attack was rare in that instead of using asymmetric warfare tactics such as launching mortars at the base and quickly retreating, the Taliban forces' staged a direct assault on U.S.-led forces.
