London Buses route 243 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.

History

This route began on 19 July 1961 to replace the trolleybus route 643, between Wood Green and Holborn Circus, as part of the trolleybus replacement program.

Route 243 only ran Monday to Saturdays while route 243A ran the Sunday service.

The Sunday service was introduced between Wood Green and Old Street to replace the discontinued route 243A and was extended Mon-Fri from Old Street to Waterloo Station to replace the Red Arrow route 505.

Extended full time to Waterloo Station in 2002 and the 243 was converted to a 24-hour service.

Before being operated by Arriva London, it was operated by London Transport at their Stamford Hill garage, using Routemasters.

Wood Green gained part of the allocation in 1966, this allocation was transferred to Tottenham (AR) in 1971.

Tottenham (AR) gained the whole allocation in 1985, and the 243 was converted to one person operation by using Metrobuses.

Volvo B7TL 10m / Wright Eclipse Gemini (VWL's) and DAF DB250LF 10.2m / Alexander ALX400 (DLA's) were bought to convert the route to low-floor.
