St Bede's is the only Christian State Secondary School in Cambridgeshire. It is partially funded by both the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia and Anglican Diocese of Ely, making the school a symbol of the increasing unity between the two denominations.

St Bede's was originally a small Roman Catholic Secondary School housed in one central building. In the light of the increasing ecumenical co-operation between the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches of England and Wales it was recognised, in 1988, as a joint Catholic/Anglican foundation.

Since that date the school has expanded and additional buildings were added; first a technology block, then a brand new suite of 12 classrooms in the St Etheldreda block (the "B Block"), followed by 4 new English classrooms, a purpose built drama and dance studio, purpose built music rooms, refurbished science labs and a state of the art Sports Hall including teaching rooms and tennis courts. Due to the increasing popularity and expansion of the school the site is littered with mobiles. The latest four million pound development will take place from August 2008 onwards, replacing all mobile classrooms with a major capital building programme, including teaching rooms, art rooms, a chaplaincy and the refurbishment of the rest of science labs.

In the past five years the school has grown from four form to five form entry and it is popular and oversubscribed. The school gained Humanities Specialist Status in September 2005 with History as the lead subject and Geography/Religious Education in support.

The school has a reputation for students that are strange, with many rival schools referring to them as "Beedies" or simply "Oddies".

Mission statement

"To create and sustain, with God's help, a learning, caring and serving community where all people are valued for who they are and for who they may become in the light of Jesus Christ."

School prayer

"Lord, Guide us as we strive for wisdom and lead us into the ways of peace. Make our hearts strong and true, our words gentle and understanding, our actions loving and just. Help our school to be a place of nurture and growth for disciples in Christ. Amen"
