The Ajanta Express ( _mr. - अजंठा एक्स प्रेस),( _hi. -अजंता एक्स प्रेस),( _te. -అజంతా ఎక్స్ ప్రెస్) is a daily express train presently running between
Kachiguda, Andhra Pradeshand ManmadJunction, a town in NasikDistrict of Maharashtra. The train was mainly introduced to cater to Shirdi Sai babadevotees.
The train was introduced in around 1975 as a
metre gaugetrain between Kacheguda, a suburb of Hyderabad, Indiaand Manmad, "via" Nizamabad, Nandedand Aurangabad. The train became popular in a short time as ManmadJunction was the point to break the journey for further destinations towards Mumbai, Itarsi, Bhopal, New Delhi, Amritsar, Howrah, Nagpur, Bilaspur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Jabalpur, Bangaloreand Ahmedabad.
The train was re-introduced as
broad gaugebetween Kachigudaand Manmadvia Bidar, Parbhani, in 1995-1996, as the gauge conversion between Vikarabadand Parbhaniprogressed.
In 2007, the train reverted to its original metre gauge route via
Nizamabadand Nandedwhich was turned into broad gauge in 2002-2003.
When introduced, it was the fastest metre gauge train in India
Origin of name
The train is named after the
Ajantacaves near Aurangabad.

The train runs completely on diesel traction and uses
WDM3A diesel locomotiveof Guntakalof South Central Railway.
The train travels a distance of 663 kilometres in approximately 12 hours 30 minutes.
