"Lola Montès" is a 1955 film, and the last to be directed by Max Ophüls. The film is based loosely on the life of Lola Montez -- portrayed by Martine Carol -- and tells the story of the 19th Century cabaret dancer and her numerous affairs, most notably with Franz Liszt and Ludwig I, King of Bavaria.

The audience is lead through the events of Lola Montès' life, through the use of flashbacks. The film was roundly criticized upon its release in France. In response, against the director's wishes, producers re-cut the film in favor of a more chronological storyline. Ophüls died shortly after this edit was released.
