size=Bremetennacum (also Bremetonnacum, Bremetenracum or Bresnetenacum Veteranorum) was a Roman fort which is now the village of
Ribchester inLancashire (gbmapping|SD650350). The site is aScheduled Ancient Monument . [cite web |title=Bremetennacum Veteranorum |url=http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=43639 |publisher=Pastscape.org.uk |accessdate=2008-03-11] The first Roman activity on the site was the establishment of a timber fort believed to have been constructed during the campaigns of Petillius Cerialis around AD 72/3. The fort fell into decline until around AD 70 when it was renovated. The renovation consisting of the recutting of ditches and the erection of new buildings. For most of its existence the Fort was garrisoned by Sarmatian cavalry brought to Britain by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the year 175. Prior to that it is suggested that the fort was garrisoned by the "ala II Asturum" but there is some uncertainty about this. Pottery evidence indicates that the fort was occupied for most of the fourth century until the final 'ending' of the Roman period.References
