Subarna Shamsher Rana

Subarna Shamsher Rana

Subarna Shamsher Rana (1910 - 1977) was a leading figure in the movement to overthrow the ruling Rana autocracy and to establish democracy in Nepal. He was part of the leadership of the Nepali Congress in the late 1940s, opposing his relatives, the Rana family, who held power in Nepal at the time.

He was later appointed Chairman of the Council of Ministers, the head of government in Nepal at the time, until elections were held in 1959, after which fellow Congress politician Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala became Prime Minister. After the Coup d'Etat by King Mahendra in 1960, he continued his struggle to bring multiparty democracy in Nepal.

He was the son of the maharaja Bhim Shamsher Rana.
