From 1959 until 1962 Tanzer worked in private legal practice in Portland. Tanzer then joined the U.S. Department of Justice in 1962, where he would remain until 1964. In 1964, while working for the Department of Justice he was sent to Mississippi as part of the Civil Rights Division investigating the deaths of three civil rights activists.Mahar, Ted. district attorney forMultnomah County, Oregon , the county where Portland is located. In 1969 he became Oregon’s first Solicitor General in theOregon Department of Justice , serving until 1971 when he became the first director of theOregon Department of Human Services . While Solicitor General he defended the state's position in the U.S. Supreme Court case of "Apodaca v. Oregon ". ["Apodaca v.
