Port-Cartier is a town in the
Côte-Nord region ofQuebec ,Canada . It is located on the north shore of theSt. Lawrence River at the mouth of theRochers River , exactly 63 kilometers southwest ofSept-Îles, Quebec .Port-Cartier had a population of 6,412 as of the 2001 Canadian census. Port-Cartier was founded in 1918 and first called Shelter Bay. The
Québec Cartier Mining Company built an iron ore processing plant in the 1950s, and modernized and expanded the town and port facility. Today, the port handles approximately 18 million metric tons of cargo per year.
