H. J. Kania

Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first Chief Justice of India. He held office from 14 August 1947 to 5 February 1951. Prior to holding the office at the Supreme Court of India, he was the Chief Justice of the Federal Court, the predecessor of the Supreme Court.

* Married (in 1925) to Kusum, daughter of Sir Chunilal Mehta.

* Did B.A. from Samaldas College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
* Did LL.B. from Government Law College, Mumbai.

Professional life

* Passed the High Court Advocate (Original Side) Examination in 1915. Was appointed Judge of the Bombay High Court.
* Served as the Judge of the Bombay High Court from 1933 to 1946.
* Served as the Acting Chief Justice Judge of the Bombay High Court in 1944 and 1945.
* Was appointed as the Judge of the Federal Court on 20 June, 1946. Held office till 13 August, 1947.
* Appointed as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on August 14, 1947.
* Took oath as the Chief Justice of India on August 15, 1947.
* Retired on November 6, 1951.
