Carolyn ("Carrie") Lynne Steinseifer (born
February 12 ,1968 inSaratoga, California ) is a retired freestyleswimmer from theUnited States , who won the gold medal in the women's 100m freestyle at the1984 Summer Olympics inLos Angeles, California . In the only dead heat in Olympic swimming history, Steinseifer and US-teammateNancy Hogshead tied in 100m freestyle in 1984 and therefore shared the gold medal. Sixteen-year old Steinseifer won a second gold in the 4x100 free relay, becoming the youngest swimming gold medalist at the 1984 Games. A year earlier she was the 100 free national champion and won three golds at the1983 Pan American Games .Steinseifer was ranked number one in the USA and fourth in the world.
